Frequently Asked Questions

faqWhat’s going on here?

Free Marconi is just two guys – Duke Long and Terry Mic – who have known each other forever and enjoy making beautiful music together. This site is the hub of our online presence where we share this music with anyone who cares to listen.

But along with that love of making music, we also share a love of exploring the brave new music frontier – that cross between declining sales in the traditional music industry and incredible new possibilities for new music business models – that nexus between art, commerce, law, and technology that some call, for lack of a better word, Music 2.0.

Explain.

Both Terry Mic and Duke Long have long been students of emerging business models and technologies and are putting some of the concepts they’ve learned into practice – things like 3P, releasing music under Creative Commons licenses, sharing vocal tracks for people to remix, social networking and the like.

In addition, they share the things they’ve learned and continue to learn with other musicians on this site. Those thoughts will eventually be collected into a free eBook – the Musician Middle-Class Manifesto.

Tell me more about the website.

You can do more than just listen to our music and read our silly ramblings here. Let’s take a look.

Staying up to date

You can stay current with all Free Marconi news and updates in lots of ways. If you’re on Facebook, you can become a fan of us there. If you’re on Twitter, you can follow us. RSS feeds are provided by the site if you’re a fan of Google Reader, Bloglines, or any of the other numerous RSS readers out there. You can also sign up to receive updates via email!

Registering and Logging in

Registering at the site is not necessary to listen to music, look at everything available on the site, or even post comments. Registration does give you some additional benefits.

You can earn points for certain actions – described below – and, well, actually that’s about it for now. But the site is still new, and we’re working on adding new features all the time!

If you do decide to register, you can do it in a number of ways. After clicking on the ‘register’ link, you’re offered a choice of either setting up a new username and password, or connecting using your Facebook or Twitter account. Either method works the same, but we included the Facebook and Twitter option for those of you who don’t want to create yet another online profile. It’s quick and easy, just follow the instructions. Don’t worry, none of your personal information is made available to this site if you sign up through Facebook or Twitter!

Points

We wanted to make this site fun for people, and what could be more fun than getting points?

Right now, there’s not many ways to get points, and you can’t do anything with them other than, well, get them. But in the future, we hope to expand this feature – giving you more ways to earn points and things to do with them.

You can see your points total at the top of the screen after you log in. Registering with the site (using either method) gives you 100 points. Leaving a comment gives you 5 points.
